Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide instructional design services?
Nope, I do not. I’ll support your decision-making process, though, and I can advise on good practices for instructional design.
What’s the difference between instructional coaching and instructional design?
Instructional design is the work of building out content and assessments, usually in an online learning platform. For example, an instructional designer would create interactives, format content, set up assessments, etc. in a learning management system, following a plan created by a subject expert. Instructional coaching, on the other hand, is support and guidance for instructors in all aspects of teaching. An instructional coach facilitates and enables your work process by helping you identify your teaching strengths, set goals, learn best practices, build your courses, respond to classroom situations, understand feedback, and reflect on your experiences.
Do you provide coaching virtually or in-person?
Currently I provide coaching virtually, and will soon expand to in-person meetings in the Burlington, Vermont area. In-person meetings outside of the Burlington area may involve additional costs.
Can you teach me to use Canvas/Blackboard/D2L?
Generally, I do not train clients on learning management systems. Access issues, differences in implementation at each institution, and rapid changes in platforms make that impossible. However, I was part of a campus Canvas admin team until early 2025, and can often offer advice related to that platform.
Can you help me figure out teaching with AI?
Teaching in the age of AI, yes. Using AI in your teaching, no. Innovating with AI as a professor is pedagogically, technologically, and ethically complex, and I prefer to refer folks to an expert. I am happy to recommend colleagues who can advise you on productive ways to use AI.
Can you do group trainings?
Yes! Please contact me and describe your needs and audience, and we’ll explore the fit. I happily offer workshops, reading groups, writing groups, roundtables, and more, as well as coaching for teams of faculty working together on a project.
I’m a K-12 teacher. Can I work with you?
I don’t typically work with folks teaching outside a higher education setting. The rare exceptions would be special projects involving experiential learning design in independent school settings. K-12 teachers should seek a coach with expertise in your subject, age group, and state/district requirements.
Do you offer any other services?
I’m considering starting a virtual “sit down and write” accountability-focused writing group. This group would be geared towards people in academia working on research or grant-writing projects, but would also be open to others. If you’re interested, please drop me a note!
